Structure & Operating Principle
A Gate Valve operates as a linear-motion isolation valve. The internal mechanism consists of a flat or wedge-shaped gate connected to a threaded stem, raised or lowered by turning a handwheel or actuator.
- Open Position: The wedge is fully retracted into the bonnet area, completely clear of the flow passage. This creates a straight-through flow path with minimal friction loss.
- Closed Position: The stem drives the wedge down into the valve body seats, forming a tight barrier that completely blocks fluid flow.
Note on Application: Gate valves are specifically engineered for full-open or full-closed on/off isolation service. They are not recommended for throttling or flow regulation, as partial opening can lead to severe seat erosion and flow-induced vibration.
